Michael Cranny School Council Minutes

April 1, 2025 – 7p.m.

Attendees: Ms. Bruno, Ms. Facchini, Ms. Fabiana Scolieri, Vishal Bangia, Zemeen Jaffer Celine Stavrou, Paramjit Kaur, Sima Saadat, Liya Ma

 

  1. Previous meeting minutes approval: Already done and posted on website

     

  2. Student leadership presentation:
  • Presented by Ms. Fabiana Scolieri
  • Student leadership divided into 3 subgroups
  • Black Excellence T-shirt contest:
  • Stella won, but the design will need adjustments
  • The colours may need to be changed for symbolic and practical reasons
  • Affirmation wall
  • Mental health board
  • Carnival at school
  • Lots of sport events
  • Trips, holiday celebrations
  • Autism acceptance: Spirit week
  • Currently doing:
    • Mental health boards
    • Heritage month and cultural holiday announcements
    • Eco Month activities
  • The leadership teams:
    • Grades 7 and 8 students as they can commit more consistently
    • Grade 8 help coaching Grade 7 members
    • Leadership roles provide opportunity for engagement as they start to feel disengaged from school 
    • Grades 5 and 6 can look forward to the participation

       

  1. Additional discussions
  • Art club
    • Since paintings on display in the library are from 10-20 years ago, current club members will get new canvas and create new art.
    • Older work also contains language and visuals that differ from best practice today
    • Old art will be stored in archive space of YRDSB

       

  • Students are taught to use the most appropriate language base on the Human Rights Act and Ontario Human Rights Code; more systematic activities on this next year

  • Movie night recap; profit: $154.87

  • Earth day:
    • Kindergarten: in their yard
    • Younger students: in the school yard
    • Older students: to the community, garbage clean-up, etc.
  • 20min makeover challenge
  • Celine: Maple High organizes a food bank (also clothing), with items placed easily accessible to those in need. Perhaps we can contribute to their effort, e.g. do a food drive. 

 

  1. Fundraiser 2025-2026:
    • Start planning and booking early
    • Ms. Bruno’s suggestion: 2 fundraising events, one in the fall and one winter/spring
    • Fall event: ideas? The big box of cards ready for holiday delivery
    • Winter/spring event: Valentine’s related or cookie sale (other ideas?)

       

  2. Teacher appreciation lunch
  • Vishal: will fundraise for this (in Cranny Chronicles?)

 

  1. Fun Fair 2025:
  • Vishal: 90% items are booked
  • Volunteers will be recruited soon
  • Will ask in the Chronicles whether parents have items to donate for silent auctions
  • In the next 1.5 months the rest will be finalized
  • Available via School cash online in early May
  • Will Cobs Bread be part of the fun fair? Will reach out to ask.
  • Vendors will be asked to bring their own tents to be ready for windy weather
  • Tables and chairs will be brought from school, also delivered from City of Vaughan, but will need to be set up by volunteers
